Gardner Jackson poses near a donkey and her foal probably in South Cheyenne Canyon near Colorado Springs in El Paso County, Colorado. He pets the foal. Gardner wears a broad-brimmed cloth hat, long pants and a loose, bloused shirt with a broad collar. Carriages are in the distance.

Gardner Jackson graduated from Amherst College and attended Columbia University. From 1919-1920, he worked for Boettcher, Porter and Company. During 1920, Gardner also reported for the Denver Times. Later in 1920, he moved to Boston, to work as a reporter for the Boston Globe. In the years 1921-1927 Gardner spearheaded the defense of Sacco and Vanzetti. William Sharpless Jackson was born (1836) and raised in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He served as an apprentice in the machinist trade in Wilmington, Delaware. For the next six years, he engaged in the lumber trade and car industry. Afterwards William S. Jackson worked for the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company in Duluth.
